What is the difference between Maileon SMTP and Email API?

Maileon SMTP is the classic way to send emails via the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. You connect your own system—such as your website or app—directly to Maileon’s mail servers with standard SMTP settings. Just as you would with, for example, Gmail or Outlook. This method is super compatible and easy to set up, especially if your software already supports standard SMTP.

SMTP via API works a little differently. Here, you send emails via Maileon’s modern API interface, without having to deal with the technical details of the SMTP protocol yourself. You simply send your email data to Maileon via an API call (usually REST), and we handle the delivery for you. Behind the scenes, SMTP is often still used, but you don’t have to worry about that.

In short: Maileon SMTP is the traditional, plug-and-play way to send emails. SMTP via API is the smart, flexible choice for companies that want more control and insight.

How quickly is my Maileon SMTP account activated?

We usually activate your account within one business day after your registration has been approved.

If domain verification or DNS configuration is still required, activation can take a maximum of three business days.

You will automatically receive a notification once the account is ready to send.

What happens if I exceed my monthly email bundle?

If you exceed the email quota of your bundle, sending remains possible.

The extra emails sent will be invoiced separately at the applicable overage rates.

You will receive a warning in advance as soon as you reach the 80% threshold of your monthly bundle.

Do I need to verify my domain before I can send?

Yes, this is an important step to ensure good deliverability.

During onboarding, we help you add the correct SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records to your domain.

This confirms that you are the sender and prevents emails from ending up in spam filters.
